First Chapter Meeting

Champlain Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, First Meeting
On Wednesday, May 13, 1964, a group of nine men from Burlington area met in the offices of the W. E. Hutton Co. at the invitation of Albert Spaulding to discuss the possibility of forming a Chapter of either the Railway Locomotive Historical Society or the National Railway Historical Society.
The nine men were Albert Spaulding, George Whitcomb, Dr. John Cunningham, Dr. M. C. Twitchell, Fred Richmond, Gloyd White, Ed Kilmer, Ben Parker and John Gardner.
Albert Spaulding, as a member of both societies, acted as temporary Chairman and gave a brief description of the two organizations. From the beginning, the most interest seemed to be focused on the National Railway Historical Society.
Briefly, the aims of the NRHS are as follows. “The National Railway Historical Society was organized in 1935 to encourage interest in rail transportation, sponsor railroad inspection trips to points of interest, record and preserve historical and educational information on railroad subjects and to promote good fellowship among its members.
A minimum of six charter members, new or transferred, is required. Dues are $ 3.50 per year or $ 1.75 after June 1st for the balance of the calendar year. NRHS presently has approximately 50 Chapters. Chapters must have a minimum of three officers, President, Secretary-Treasurer and National Director and maintain a reasonable schedule of activities such as films, slides, histories, walks along old roadbeds, field trips and participation in activities of other chapters. The national organization meets once a year.
Each person present described his own particular railroad interests.
It was felt that the NRHS had the most general appeal and a unanimous vote indicated a decision to form a chapter of this society.
Albert Spaulding volunteered to serve as President and appointed John Gardner as Secretary-Treasurer and George Whitcomb as National Director. George Whitcomb agreed to serve with the understanding that he would be unable to do any traveling.
The proposed tentative name shall be The Champlain Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society and shall be open to all interested persons in this area, including New Yorkers.
The following names were propose as possible candidates for membership: Lloyd Bucklin, Jay Wulfson, Bob Holland, Ted Paul, Sterling Emerson, Dr. Ed Irwin, Bob Fritz, James Marvin, Lee Fisk, A. A. Murray, James MacFarlene, Dick Gallagher, bob Brusco, Bill Luginbuhl, Bob Jones, Jack Couture, Jim Sykes, David Aubin, Ed Greif, J. A. The meeting adjourned at approximately 9:45
