Railroad Safety

All to often, we turn on the television or radio, or we pick up the newspaper and read of an accident or incident involving a train.  It could involve motor vehicles, pedestrians who are trespassing on the tracks, or a mechanical failure that caused a derailment.  It also could be weather related.
Whatever the cause, these incidents occur at an alarming rate.  In the 1970’s a program called Operation Lifesaver was created between railroads, local communities and law enforcement to help the public become more aware and knowledgeable of potential dangers that might be found around railroads.
Railroads, by their nature, are potentially dangerous places for the employees working on the trains, or those working in maintenance or yards.  The railroads offer safety training or refresher sessions at regular intervals.
Below are short videos highlighting various aspects of railroad safety.  The first is a cartoon from The Simpsons, which initially might seem funny, but points out some serious issues about trying to beat the train to a grade crossing.  Others are from various states and Operation Lifesaver programs. Finally, there are two vintage safety training films put out by individual railroads.
