 Originally conceived by Silkroad’s Artistic Director Rhiannon Giddens, the American Railroad project sheds light on the profound yet often-overlooked contributions of Indigenous and African Americans, as well as Chinese, Irish, Japanese, and other immigrant communities, to the construction of the U.S. Transcontinental Railroad and connecting railways across North America.

Most people don't realize that the Wabash Cannonball, made famous by the Carter Family in 1932, had an eariler version with the same tune. It was entitled The Great Rock Island Route and was written by J.A. Roff in 1882. William Kindt rewrote the song into the better know Wabash Cannonball in 1904. It wasn't unti 1949 that the Wabash Railroad actually named one of their passenger trains "The Wabash Cannonball" |
